Subject: UITP World Congress And Mobility And City Transport Exhibition - Rome, Italy - June 5 - 9, 2005


It is recommended that the Commission receive this report for information with a request that the Commission provide direction to staff on which Commissioners, in addition to the Chair and Vice-Chair, will be attending the 2005 UITP World Congress scheduled for June 5-9, 2005 in Rome, Italy.


Funds in the amount of $24,000.00 have been included in the 2005 TTC Operating Budget to cover the estimated cost for registration, travel and accommodation associated with the attendance of the Chair, Vice-Chair, Chief General Manager and General Secretary. An estimated amount of $6,000.00 will be required to cover the cost of each additional Commissioner who wishes to attend. 


At its meeting on November 17, 2004, the Commission approved the attendance of the Chair, Vice-Chair or designated Commissioner, Chief General Manager and the General Secretary to attend the 2005 UITP World Congress scheduled for June 5 – 9, 2005 in Rome, Italy.  When approving the aforementioned travel request, the Commission adopted an ancillary motion that any other Commissioners be permitted to attend the 2005 World Congress; and that the CGM’s Office be notified of a Commissioners interest within two months.  In this regard, Commissioner Ashton, Commissioner Balkissoon, Commissioner Bussin and Commissioner Shiner have expressed an interest in attending the Congress.  In order that registration and travel arrangements can be finalized, it is necessary at this time that a decision be reached on the number of Commissioners who will be attending.


The International Union of Public Transport (UITP) is a world-wide association of urban and regional passenger transport operating authorities and suppliers.  The Association is based in Brussels and has over 2,000 members from 80 countries, including the Toronto Transit Commission.  It provides information, research and analysis on all aspects of public transport and serves as a valuable resource and networking tool for those in the transit industry.  The Mobility and City Transport Exhibition portion of the conference is considered to be one of the world’s leading showcases for urban transport technology, equipment and services.
