Work description and purpose

As part of its streetcar track maintenance program and state of good repair, TTC will be conducting rail grinding along a number of sections of its streetcar network that has developed some rail roughness. From April 25 to 29*, pending weather, a crew will be active on Bathurst Street between Dupont Street and Lake Shore Boulevard.

The TTC has obtained a contracted service to perform the rail grinding. This work is intended to improve the current condition of the rail surface that will aid in reducing noise and vibration levels, extend the life of the rail and provide a smoother streetcar operation through those areas.

Work hours

To ensure that this grinding operation is carried out to its optimum potential, the slow moving rail-grinding unit will begin operations from approximately 7 p.m. nightly and will continue until approximately 7 a.m.

Various sections of Bathurst Street scheduled for rail maintenance during this week include:

  • Dupont to Herrick (southbound track)
  • Nassau to Harbord (southbound)
  • Robinson to Barton (northbound)
  • Robinson to King (southbound)
  • Wellington to Richmond (northbound)
  • King to Fleet (southbound)
  • ake Shore to Niagara (northbound)

A street sweeper will be used to clean the track area each day following rail grinding operations.

On-street parking and traffic

On-street parking, traffic and transit will be maintained as best as possible through the various moving work zones. Toronto Police Services personnel will be on-site each night to assist with traffic flow as required.
