Work description and purpose

TTC track staff is currently working overnight between Bloor and Summerhill stations to conduct essential subway track maintenance. The work involves replacing ballast (stones) and tamping areas of the track.

The current conditions along this section of track require subway trains to operate at a reduced speed affecting overall service levels on Line 1. Once the maintenance work is completed, normal subway speed operation will be restored to the section of track.

Activities include;

  • The removal of the ballast from the track area using a vacuum unit on a subway work-car. This method is quicker and less likely to cause damage to existing underground cabling and possible disruptions to subway service. Noise will be evident from the vacuum unit when it is in full operation.
  • Tamping is carried out to maintain proper support from the new ballast foundation that secures the track in place and helps provide for a smoother operation through the track area. Tamping can only be conducted when subway service is not running.

Work hours and timeline

This work is scheduled nightly until May 17*, and is conducted overnight after subway service ends for the evening. The work south of Rosedale Station is expected to be completed by May 12*.

Thank you for your patience during this essential subway maintenance work.
