Work description and purpose

As part of the infrastructure work underway at Main Street Station, TTC is upgrading the streetcar overhead wiring system.

Starting on Monday, July 23, TTC overhead crews will installing new streetcar overhead infrastructure on Main Street from the Danforth Avenue intersection to the Main Station. The overhead wiring upgrade is necessary for the future operation of the TTC’s new accessible streetcars. 506 Carlton streetcars return to Main Street Station in September. Daytime work within the Main Street Station property involving the bus roadway, overhead, walkway and lighting upgrades is continuing.

Work hours

To complete this overhead work on Main Street as safely and with minimal impact to traffic as possible, TTC staff will work each night between 1 a.m. and 5 a.m. Work is restricted to the night time due to high traffic volumes on Danforth Avenue.

Equipment

On average, two TTC overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment will be used to carry out this work. While efforts will be made by the crew to keep noise to a minimum, beeping sounds from back-up alarms on the TTC trucks will be audible. Equipment lights may also be noticeable.

Traffic movement

Traffic will be maintained through the work zone with some lane restrictions.

TTC service changes

All bus routes through the overhead work zone at Main and Danforth area will be maintained.
