What we are doing and why?

Starting this summer, TTC will be constructing a sand silo to serve the pneumatic sand dispensing system of the new low-floor streetcars. The silo is used to replenish traction sand in streetcars used to mitigate wheel slip and improve traction and safety when braking. The sand silo will be located on TTC property and will be replenished approximately 4 times per year. An employee parking lot access off of Connaught will also be constructed to prevent interference with streetcar access into the yard. Additional upgrades will take place within the carhouse and boiler room.

What to expect

  • Activities will include drilling, excavation, curb cutting, welding, concrete pouring, paving and silo installation.
  • Work hours are from 7 a.m. to 7 p.m. with the possibility of evening and weekend work to complete the work as quickly as possible.
  • The removal of one tree is required (noted in the above plan). The permit has been obtained.
  • Noise and some vibration can be expected with this work. Efforts will be made to keep disruption associated with noise and dust to a minimum.

Equipment

A drilling rig and excavator will be used to carry out this work.
