Board Meeting Highlights
TTC/Metrolinx to discuss DRL corridor options
Board Members approved a motion by TTC Chair Karen Stintz directing TTC CEO Andy Byford to initiate discussions with appropriate Metrolinx staff to determine the feasibility of using the Georgetown and Lakeshore East transit corridors for the Downtown Relief Line as part of the Downtown Relief Line environmental assessment.
Last October, the Board unanimously accepted the findings of a joint TTC/City of Toronto report detailing the demand and benefits of a Downtown Relief Line in addressing overcrowding on the Yonge Subway, and endorsed City Council’s 2009 decision directing that Metrolinx be requested to prioritize the Downtown Relief Line in advance of the Yonge North Extension (Yonge Subway extension to Richmond Hill) in order to address future capacity issues.
Spadina Extension station renamed Pioneer Village Station
The Board approved the renaming of the subway station under construction at Steeles Avenue West and Northwest Gate to Pioneer Village Station. The name was shortened from the previously approved Black Creek Pioneer Village Station. Pioneer Village Station will include two entrances: one located on the north side of Steeles Avenue West in York Region and one on the south side of Steeles Avenue West in Toronto.
Board Enquiry About BIXI Program
The Board approved the findings of a TTC report that determined there is no viable business case for integrating BIXI Toronto into the TTC. The Board supported a motion from Commissioner Alan Heisey directing TTC staff to advise the City’s Executive Committee that the TTC would be prepared to reconsider the item if the City is unable to find another satisfactory resolution to the BIXI issue.
TTC New Streetcar Implementation Plan
The Board approved a report on the TTC’s New Streetcar Implementation Plan. The renewal program summary, which was deferred from June’s meeting, addresses the TTC’s streetcar fleet renewal and growth, new vehicle delivery, overhead rebuild requirements, streetcar network upgrades and route deployment order. The report also addresses the life extension of 105 CLRV streetcars to bridge the fleet until the full rollout of the new accessible streetcars while phasing in the new Presto smartcard fare collection system and all-door boarding.
Design work for future TTC bus garage
The Board approved the award of a contract worth $11.5 million to Stantec Consulting Ltd. for design services for the future McNicoll Bus Garage at Kennedy Road and McNicoll Avenue in Scarborough. The new bus garage is required to provide appropriate facilities for the maintenance and storage of the TTC’s expanding bus fleet. The garage will have capacity for 250 buses.
53 Steeles East & 95 York Mills trials begin September
Board Members approved trial changes to the 53 Steeles East bus route at Pharmacy Avenue and at Markham Road, and to the 95 York Mills bus route at Kennedy Road. Both six-month trials start in September.
