TTC removing Sunday-only streetcar stops June 7
May 29, 2015
The Toronto Transit Commission is removing all 41 Sunday-only streetcar stops June 7. The decision to remove the stops was made after consultation with the public and City Councillors, and was approved by the TTC Board in May, 2014.
Sunday stops, which were established in the 1920s to reduce walking distance to nearby churches, are too close to existing adjacent stops. Transportation best practices state that streetcar stops should be 250 to 350 metres apart, and no less than 200 metres to one another. Sunday stops are, on average, about 100 metres from an adjacent regular stop. As well, for safety reasons, the TTC is adjusting all streetcar stops to ensure they are located at signalized intersections or crosswalks.
Notices about the removal of the Sunday streetcar stops have been posted at all Sunday-only stop locations.
