What is happening at Keele and Finch?

TTC is building the Toronto-York Spadina Subway Extension, a six station 8.6 kilometre line that will extend from the existing Downsview Station and will end at Highway 7, west of Jane Street. The second station on the subway extension will be Finch West Station, to be located under Keele Street, north of Finch Avenue West.

A major section of tunnels was completed on March 5, 2013, linking Finch West Station to Downsview Station. A special three tunnel structure, under Keele Street at the Hydro corridor, is being constructed using Sequential Excavation Method (SEM) tunnelling.

Finch West Station construction is progressing well. The station walls are being built and the contractor has begun pouring concrete for the concourse level. During some concrete pours, southbound Keele Street will be closed from Murray Ross Parkway to Toro Road.

Construction Work Hours

The City of Toronto has approved a noise by-law amendment for major transit projects which allows contractors to work extended hours and on weekends for the duration of the project, when required. Extended work hours are expected to be in effect in the Keele/Finch area this spring and summer.

Finch West Station construction work is permitted under the noise by-law from 7:00 a.m. to 11:00 p.m., seven days per week. The contractor has applied for an exemption to the noise by-law for major concrete pours this spring and summer for work outside of these hours. Construction Notices will be sent out before extended work hours begin to keep residents and businesses informed.

Construction of Finch West Subway Station

A section of the construction site north of Toro Road on Keele Street is being backfilled this spring and the area will be used for the installation of track and other tunnel equipment. The drop shafts in the photo shown below are large concrete boxes used by construction crews to lower and deliver subway equipment and materials down into the tunnels. The area where the drop shafts are located was used as an extraction shaft during tunnelling to remove the tunnel boring machines “Holey” and “Moley”.
