Overhead Upgrades

509 Harbourfront / Queens Quay - overhead upgrades

What we are doing and why

As part of its network wide program, the TTC will be upgrading overhead infrastructure along the 509 Harbourfront route from September 3 to January 2025. This work will be completed in phases and is vital to provide streetcar service for the long term future.

From September 3 to November 2024, TTC overhead crews will be conducting overhead wire upgrades and underground work between Union Station and Queens Quay West and Bathurst Street. During this time, the TTC will perform critical inspections and replace aging infrastructure to support future service. See below for further work details.

Work activities and locations

Work will generally be conducted along the 509 Harbourfront streetcar right-of-way:

  • From September 3 to November 2024, overhead work will be conducted from Union Station to Bathurst Street. Work will be prioritized between Union Station and Spadina Avenue to return partial 509 Harbourfront streetcars between Union Station and Queens Quay Loop (Spadina and Queens Quay) by early October. Afterwards, work will be focused between Bathurst Street and Spadina Avenue until November 2024.
  • From late November to January 2025, overhead upgrades will be completed along the streetcar right-of-way on Fleet Street, west of Bathurst Street towards Strachan Avenue.

As a result of this work, there will be temporary changes along the 509 Harbourfront route.

Equipment

TTC overhead trucks with hydraulic equipment will be used to carry out this work. While efforts will be made by the crew to keep noise to a minimum, beeping sounds when the trucks are backing up will be audible. Equipment lights may also be noticeable.

Work hours

To complete this work safely and efficiently, TTC overhead crews may work around-the-clock.

Motorist, cyclist, and pedestrian impacts

  • Work will take place within the streetcar right-of-way, on TTC property, and along intersections of the 509 Harbourfront route.
  • Motorists may notice increased traffic along Queens Quay West due to replacement buses.
  • Sidewalks and cyclist lanes will be maintained.
