TTC Innovation and Sustainability Strategy 2024-2028
Environmental sustainability is a key priority for the TTC. Operating one of the largest fleets of battery-electric buses in North America puts us at the leading edge of transit sustainability. To maintain our leadership in the industry, we must continue to innovate for the future and apply a sustainability lens to everything we do. In response to the climate emergency, the City of Toronto's TransformTO Net Zero Strategy targets net zero emissions community-wide by 2040. Public transit plays a crucial role, driving the shift away from personal automobiles toward low carbon modes of transportation.
The Innovation and Sustainability Strategy provides a five-year strategic roadmap to embed corporate innovation and environmental sustainability at the TTC constructing a more innovative and sustainable public transit system. The Strategy details actions, roles and responsibilities which have been developed through engagement with key stakeholders and reflect a shared commitment to a greener future.
This Strategy builds on the foundation laid by the TTC's 5-Year Corporate Plan, which identifies both corporate innovation and environmental sustainability as Key Principles essential to meeting the evolving needs of our customers, stakeholders, and the environment. This Strategy describes how the TTC will contribute to the reduction of city-wide GHG emissions to achieve net zero by 2040. Further, our Strategy aligns with the City of Toronto’s First Resilience Strategy (FRS) and Sustainable City of Toronto Fleets Plan. Specifically, the FRS states that we must continue to prioritize service and capital improvements to the TTC that make the system more resilient to the effects of the climate crisis.
