Line 1 Fire Ventilation Upgrades

The TTC is planning for capacity improvements at some of Line 1’s busiest subway stations to allow more trains to operate. As a result, fire ventilation systems across the TTC will be improved as part of the program which will allow for increased system capacity in the future with more trains running and shorter wait times for our customers.

The fire ventilation system at St Clair West Station will be upgraded to allow for increased system capacity in the future and to comply with fire life safety. The work will take place between 2026 and 2031, grouped into three projects:

  • Upgrading the fire ventilation system at St Clair West Station.
    (Construction timeline  Spring 2026 – Summer 2029)*

  • Upgrading Markdale Emergency Service Building (ESB) located within Cedarvale Ravine with a fire ventilation plant.
    (Construction timeline Summer 2026 – Summer 2030)*

  • Upgrading Lytton ESB located at Yonge Street and Lytton Boulevard (close to the Snider Parkette) with a fire ventilation plant.
    (Construction timeline Summer 2028 - Winter 2031)*

What is a fan plant?

A fan plant consists of large bi-directional fans, duct work and silencer equipment to control the noise as well as a ventilation shaft. The fan plant is also complete with electrical and mechanical rooms, which keep the electrical rooms at cool operating temperatures. There is also other equipment in the fan plant like drainage, sump pit and communication equipment.

*Pending weather, possible third party union strikes and unforeseen site conditions and events
