Contactless Elevator Access

As part of the TTC’s commitment to improving accessibility and modernizing transit service for all, we are testing a new technology that provides touchless access to TTC elevator buttons using a smartphone and the free Contactless Access™ app.

The app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to allow wireless control of elevator buttons from up to four feet away.

TTC has installed the technology as a pilot project at Finch, Kennedy, Kipling, Union and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations and is looking for feedback from customers and employees about the technology and their experience using it. The feedback collected is important and will be used to determine if this feature is beneficial to TTC customers.

Using the Contactless Access™ app

There are two ways to get the Contactless Access™ app for free:

  1. Download the app from the App Store (iOS) or Google Play (Android) before your trip*
  2. Use the camera on your mobile smart device to scan the QR code posted at any of the elevators at the pilot stations and follow the instructions
*The Contactless Access™ app’s fail-safe design does not modify the current elevator controls. Use of the app is optional. All existing physical buttons continue to work as they always have. Before your trip, check the Service Advisories and Accessibility Alerts for the latest information on station elevators and escalators. Visit our Stay Informed page for more information about planning your trip.
  3. Once downloaded, open the app and let it scan for nearby elevators; you must be within four feet for the app to work with the elevator technology
  4. Accept app permissions then use the buttons on-screen to operate the elevator

NOTE: If the interior elevator buttons do not show up on your smart device screen, click ‘Find Buttons’ (on iPhone) or ‘Search’ (on Android) to refresh your device and control the interior buttons.

FAQ

  • What is the benefit of the contactless elevator access technology?

The Contactless Access™ app allows customers to operate TTC elevators outfitted with the Contactless Access technology from up to four feet away, increasing accessibility for customers with disabilities, seniors and customers pushing or carrying large or awkward items that are difficult to get up station stairs or escalators.

  • Why is this technology being tested?

Contactless elevator access is another way we are improving and modernizing our transit service. The feedback collected will be used to determine if customers find this feature beneficial.

  • Where is this technology being tested?

TTC is testing contactless elevator access technology as a pilot project at five locations: Finch, Kennedy, Kipling, Union and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations.

  • Why is this technology only being tested at five stations?

Like most pilot projects, testing Contactless Access™ technology on a small scale allows the TTC to determine customer benefits and usage, as well as manage risk and identify defects, flaws or challenges before committing significant resources system-wide.

  • How did the TTC determine which stations would be included in the pilot?

The TTC is testing these features at our terminal stations on Lines 1 and 2 plus Union Station, all of which have high elevator usage. Customers may also connect to Pearson Airport via UP Express or the 192 Airport Rocket from Union or Kipling Stations. Elevators in Terminals 1 and 3 at Pearson Airport are equipped with the Contactless Access™ technology and customers can operate these elevators with the same app.

  • Why is using the Contactless Access™ app better than just pressing the existing elevator buttons?

With contactless elevator access technology, customers have quick, sanitary and secure touch-free access to TTC elevators. The Contactless Access™ app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to allow wireless control of elevator buttons from up to four feet away, which customers with limited reach range may find easier than using buttons inside and outside the elevator.

  • Do I need network access to use the Contactless Access™ app?

Wi-Fi or network access is only required when you download the app from the App Store or Google Play. You may download the app before your trip or you may scan the QR code posted at any TTC elevator at Finch, Kennedy, Kipling, Union or Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations to download the app while connected to our TCONNECT Wi-Fi network, available at all subway stations.

To access TCONNECT on your mobile device select TCONNECT within your device’s Wi-Fi settings. Once selected, open a browser and follow the instructions on the welcome screen for access.

If you have questions or difficulty connecting, call our Help Desk at 416-777-9434 (WiFi) or send a message to info@TCONNECT.ca

  • Why are the buttons inside the elevator not showing up on my smart device screen?

Once you enter the elevator, if the interior buttons do not show up on your smart device screen, you can click ‘Find Buttons’ (on iPhone) or ‘Search’ (on Android) to refresh your device and control the interior buttons.

  • Is the Contactless Access™ app safe?

The Contactless Access™ app uses Bluetooth Low Energy (BLE) technology to allow wireless control of TTC elevator buttons from up to four feet away. The app itself does not require Wi-Fi, data services or network access* so it is not susceptible to hacking. BLE technology also means the app is energy efficient and uses little battery.

  • How is my privacy protected when I’m using the app?

The Contactless Access™ app does not capture or store any personal data and does not use Wi-Fi or data services. Wi-Fi or network access is only required to download the app from the App Store or Google Play.

  • Is the Contactless Access™ app the only way to access the elevators at the pilot stations?

No, use of the app is optional. All existing physical buttons continue to work as they always have.

  • Does the Contactless Access™ app only work in the five TTC stations?

The Contactless Access™ app is universal and allows you to control any elevators or doors equipped with Contactless Access™ technology. Currently, the app only works with TTC elevators at Finch, Kennedy, Kipling, Union and Vaughan Metropolitan Centre stations.
