TTC hosts 2017 Underground Freedom Train Ride

This Monday night, July 31, the TTC will host more than 1,000 people for the fifth annual midnight Underground Freedom Train Ride commemorating Emancipation Day on Aug. 1. The event is presented by A Different Booklist bookstore and is symbolic of the role of the Underground Railroad in Canadian history. Celebrations include singing, poetry readings, drum playing and remarks by the African Canadian Heritage Association. Joining the ride will be Mayor John Tory and TTC Chair Josh Colle.

“Emancipation Day gives us an opportunity to explore and celebrate the rich African-Canadian history that has helped build our city. It is also a day to recognize their struggle for human rights,” says Mayor Tory. “The Underground Freedom Train Ride allows Canadians of all backgrounds to learn about the incredible history of our African Canadians as builders, advocates, and people who defended Canada in many challenging times and who lead in so many ways. Knowing more about this distinguished history of achievement helps all of us to better understand who we are as Canadians.”

When: Mon., July 31 - Tue., Aug. 1, 2017
Where: TTC Line 1 Yonge-University, Union to Sheppard West stations
Start time: Attendees will meet at Union Station at approximately 10:40 p.m. The train arrives at Sheppard West Station at approximately 12:02 a.m.

The Underground Freedom Train Ride is a large festive gathering that is open to the public.
