TTC embraces the message that Every Child Matters on National Day for Truth and Reconciliation

This Sat., Sept. 30, on the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, all TTC subway trains, buses, streetcars and Wheel-Trans vehicles will display decals or orange flags, demonstrating the TTC’s commitment to the process of reconciliation with First Nations, Inuit and Metis peoples, in Toronto and across Canada.

Decals and flags will carry the message that every child matters, honouring survivors of residential and day schools, and the children who never returned home, their families and communities.

TTC is also providing its employees with special orange-shirt pins, and is encouraging frontline employees to wear an orange t-shirt over their uniform.

“We are proud that the TTC and its employees are embracing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, by affirming that every child matters and working to heal the wounds caused by generations of injustice,” said Mayor Olivia Chow. “Displaying decals and orange flags on the TTC’s iconic trains, buses and streetcars, is a powerful gesture of support for the survivors of residential and day schools, and their families, especially those who live in Toronto.”

“On behalf of the Board, I am heartened by the dedication shown by TTC employees, who are embracing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation, and working hard every day to make the TTC a more equitable and inclusive transit system.” said TTC Chair Jamaal Myers.

“The TTC welcomes the opportunity to observe the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation,” said TTC CEO Rick Leary. “We recognize the important role the TTC has in the daily life of Toronto and for the people we serve. We are reflecting, learning and committing to doing better, and constantly striving for reconciliation and inclusivity.”

This morning, the TTC held a Sunrise Ceremony led by Indigenous employees at its Arrow Road Division in honour of the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation. In addition, work by Indigenous artist Fallon Simard is featured in messages recognizing the National Day for Truth and Reconciliation on station screens, social media, and across internal channels throughout the Commission.
