Transit etiquette

Helpful advice for travelling on the TTC.

Here are some tips and reminders to help make everyone’s trip as enjoyable as possible:

  • Wait for others to exit a bus, streetcar or subway before boarding.
  • Move behind the white line to the back of the bus or streetcar or to the centre of the train. Don’t block the doors.
  • Wait for people using mobility devices to get on the bus, streetcar or subway first.
  • Be aware of Priority Seating areas. Offer your seat to those who need it, such as people with disabilities, seniors or pregnant persons. Remember not all disabilities are visible.
  • Take off your backpack and place it on your lap or on the floor.
  • If you are travelling in a group, talk quietly to each other.
  • Use headphones when listening to music or talking on your cell phone. Remove your headphones or reduce the volume in stations so you can hear important announcements.
  • Avoid blocking doors and aisles with your belongings. Make sure you have all your belongings before you exit.
  • Don’t leave litter behind.
  • You can rack your bike on the front of a TTC bus any time of day but remember that bikes and e-bikes are only permitted on board TTC vehicles, if space allows, during off-peak hours, which are Monday to Friday before 6:30 a.m., between 10 a.m. and 3 p.m. or after 7 p.m.
  • If you lose something on the TTC, visit the Lost Articles Office at Bay Station or call 416-393-4100.
